THE WHO's ROGER DALTREY: 'PETE Is Innocent'

January 13, 2003

THE WHO singer Roger Daltrey yesterday broke his silence on the claims of paedophilia against his guitarist bandmate Pete Townshend and said: "I believe Pete is innocent."

Daltrey, 58, said Townshend had spoken to him about campaigning against paedophile material two years ago.

He told The Sun: "Pete was very angry about how easy it was to get hold of child pornography on the internet.

"I believe his innocence will be proven. My gut instinct is that he is not a paedophile and I know him better than most.

"If he was a Gary Glitter I'd tell you and I'd say he deserves everything he gets. Pete has perhaps been a little naive the way he has gone about it, but I believe his intentions are good."

Daltrey confirmed his pal vowed to fight child porn after stumbling on an advert for a perv site while on the Net with his son.

He said: "Pete was disgusted. The ad was made to look like a video game, attractive to kids. It made him angry that people were making money out of it and he's discussed this a lot with me."
